Arts & Disability in Somerset
In September 2002, the Somerset local authorities and ARTlife took delivery of an ambitious action plan for developing arts and disability work across the county.
This jointly commissioned plan was in response to a growing need for a collaborative way forward, with agreed criteria for best practice and a raising of the level of awareness.
Consultant Catherine Beedell is now helping to deliver her action plan in partnership with Social Services, Health Authorities, Education and arts organisations, to create real opportunities in the arts for disabled people throughout Somerset.
ArtsXchange - A major new arts project for people with learning disabilities and difficulties
The biggest Somerset-wide arts project for people with learning disabilities yet will be going ahead, thanks to a funding award from Arts Council England together with funding from Somerset County Council Community Directorate and the Somerset Arts Officers Group’s Arts and Disability Fund. The project is called ArtsXchange and will be very much led and influenced by its participants.
This exciting and innovative proposal brings together several art forms including music, drumming, dance, drama, storytelling and mixed media and will engage people with a wide range of learning disabilities living in all five districts of Somerset . There are many aspects of the project including skills development and skills sharing for artists, carers, support workers and participants; master classes to be delivered by arts companies whose members have a learning disability; taster sessions; performances and community workshops and the development of a Somerset Arts and Learning Disability network.
